Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that involves correcting teeth and jaws that are not positioned properly. Crooked and misaligned teeth are difficult to clean and are at a higher risk of decay, gum disease, etc. Poorly aligned teeth can also cause extra stress on the chewing muscles leading to neck, back and shoulder pain, headaches and TMD. Timely orthodontic treatment can enhance your appearance and help you maintain healthier teeth.
Some of the orthodontic treatments offered at Complete Family Dentistry are:
Braces are the most commonly used option to straighten teeth. They consist of bands, wires and brackets. Bands are fixed around the teeth and are used as an anchor for the braces, while brackets are bonded to the teeth. Archwires are passed through the brackets and attached to the bands. Tightening the archwire puts tension on the teeth, which gradually shifts them to their proper position. Braces are adjusted monthly to achieve the desired alignment.
Clear Orthodontic Aligners (ClearCorrect and In-house Clear Aligners)
Clear aligners are suitable for people who wish to correct the alignment of their smile without having to wear metal braces. These treatments involve wearing a series of aligners that are custom made for you and can be fitted over the upper and lower teeth. Patients switch to the next aligner in the series approximately every two weeks. They work to gradually shift the teeth into their appropriate places and can be easily removed to eat, brush and floss.
Post-Orthodontic Treatment (Retainers)
After your braces have been removed, your newly positioned teeth may tend to shift out of alignment. A retainer is a dental appliance worn after the removal of braces to prevent the teeth from moving back. Retainers can be fixed or removable.
