Periodontal Services

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and other structures around the teeth such as the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone. It could range from a simple gum inflammation to a more serious infection that can cause damage to the soft tissue and the bone that supports the teeth. Gum disease is caused by bacteria in our mouth. The bacteria, together with mucus or other particles, form plaque on the teeth. Brushing and flossing help remove plaque, but in the absence of proper dental care, plaque hardens and forms tartar, which can cause tooth decay and gum problems.

Following are some of the indications of gum disease:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Bad breath that won’t go away
  • Painful chewing
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth
  • Sensitive teeth

Some of the periodontal treatments offered at the Complete Family Dentistry office are:

  • Scaling and Root Planing (Root Surface Debridement): this is a non-surgical procedure that involves a deep cleaning to remove tartar from below the gum line and then smoothing the root surfaces to prevent reinfection.
  • Gum Graft Surgery: This procedure reinforces thin gums or fills in places where gums have receded. Grafted tissue, most often taken from the roof of the mouth, is stitched in place, adding tissue to the affected area.
  • Dental Crown Lengthening: This procedure involves adjustment of the gum and bone to expose more of the tooth’s crown. It can be used to fix gummy smiles.
  • Pocket Reduction (Gingivectomy / Osseous Surgery): this procedure is used to reduce the depth of deep periodontal pockets. The treatment involves cleaning of the periodontal pockets and lifting them so that the gum can reattach itself to the teeth.
  • Ridge Augmentation: If the facial plate of a tooth socket is thin and breaks during the process of extraction or if this area was already missing, it needs to be repaired in order to place an implant or for aesthetic reasons. This involves placing a bone graft into the tooth socket and replicating the size of the ridge.
  • Regenerative Procedures: these are used to restore bone and gum tissue lost because of severe periodontal disease.
  • Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation: This technique involves adjusting the gum tissue without sutures or incisions. It makes use of a needle to make a small hole in the gum tissue. Special instruments are then inserted through this pinhole to gently loosen the tissue, causing the gum line to expand and cover the exposed root structure.
  • Sinus Lift: When teeth are extracted, the bone left behind can be just a thin ridge. In order to place an implant in a case like this, the bone between the mouth and the maxillary sinus may need to be augmented with a sinus graft or sinus lift.
  • Bone Grafting: Bone grafting surgery is used to add artificial or natural bone to the jaw to enhance bone density and increase the success rate of implant surgery.
